This weekend Mike Edwards, a member of the Young Life team, captured his first National Hot Rod Association Full Throttle Pro Stock World Championship at the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals in Pomona, Calif.

Edwards entered the Pomona event needing only to qualify to win the world championship title, and by the end of the day Saturday, Edwards, with his ART/Young Life Pontiac GXP, qualified No. 1 just as he has 16 times this season. The points earned for Edwards’ No. 1 starting spot, combined with 10 qualifying bonus points earned, gave Edwards a 150-point lead over second-place Greg Anderson, which was more than enough to clinch the title.

This was a great culmination to a winning season full of racing and ministry for Edwards. He had five wins this 2009 season (Atlanta, Bristol, Seattle, Charlotte and Richmond) with 10 final-round appearances. At each national event, Mike and his team share with kids about the sport of drag racing as well as the great news of God's love for them through Jesus Christ.

Mike Edwards Motorsports (MEM) also partners with Young Life in a project called "A Team on a Mission." This program gives drivers, sponsors, racing teams and fans a chance to send disadvantaged kids to Young Life camps across the country.

Young Life is like drag racing. It's an experience that you have to see (and hear!) up close to really understand. For kids, Young Life begins with the experience of caring adults who "show up" in their lives. Young Life leaders are adults whose experiences of God's love lead them to go into the sometimes turbulent and intimidating world of adolescents as friends and mentors. But that's just the beginning, because through Young Life, kids also experience fun and adventure through weekly meetings called "club" and at Young Life camp, where we promise kids they'll have the "best week of their lives!" But most importantly, Young Life offers kids a hope and a vision for the abundant life they were created to live.

Young Life leaders have been inviting kids into this life-changing experience for more than six decades. Founded in 1941, Young Life is a non-profit organization active in all 50 states and more than 50 countries reaching an estimated one million teens each year. Young Life has 20 premier camping properties in operation across North and Central America where leaders bring more than 90,000 kids for a weekend during the school year or a week during the summer; approximately 20,000 kids experience Young Life camping in other locations around the world.

Since 2001, MEM has been in partnership with Young Life to bring a message of hope to middle school and high school students throughout the United States. Edwards and his Pro Stock Pontiac are funded by several Christian foundations that make it possible for him to carry the Young Life logo. Edwards has been involved with racing in one way or another for more than 35 years with the last 13 years in NHRA Pro Stock. He and his wife, Lisa, reside in Coweta, Okla.
