College Director (or Staff Associate) — Notre Dame, IN

Young Life, a global organization that ministers to adolescents, is looking for a full-time staff member to direct ministry to college students at the University of Notre Dame and the surrounding community.

Description:

The director will be empowered to spiritually lead, programmatically grow existing ministry, and entrepreneurially start new ministry, all while being part of an existing Young Life area that includes an established board/committee, a healthy donor base, an experienced area director, multiple staff members, and 30+ volunteer leaders — all who view college ministry as an essential piece of the greater vision of pointing every middle school, high school and college student to Jesus Christ.

The director will model, develop and oversee ministry that includes outreach/evangelization, discipleship/formation, community service, and leadership development. Young Life’s work with students who attend the University of Notre Dame and surrounding colleges grew significantly from 2016-2020. The director will benefit from this four-year “proof-of-concept,” re-imagine ministry to achieve new levels, and eventually expand to other schools. The director will prioritize spiritual leadership, in-person ministry to college students, team-building, and ecumenical collaboration with universities, campus ministries and local churches/parishes.

The unique combination of multiple layers of support (through an established mission community) and opportunities for growth (personally and professionally) makes this a great position for someone seeking to live out a vocation to college ministry.

Responsibilities:

  • Grow and lead spiritually as an intentional disciple of Jesus and faithful member of his Church.
  • Thrive as a like-minded member of the area-wide leadership team.
  • Develop, cast and implement a vision to reach every college student in the geographic area of Michiana (~25,000 students at six schools in Notre Dame/South Bend/Mishawaka/Granger, Ind.).
  • Pursue and build friendships of accompaniment with college students by going where they are on campuses and in the community.
  • Lead a flagship program that centers on an incarnational/relational/inclusive approach in evangelization/outreach, formation/discipleship, and community engagement/service.
  • Grow and direct a team of diverse staff and volunteer leaders who lead ministries that are unique to their campuses yet consistent with the mission and values of Young Life.
  • Utilize Young Life camping, including the spring break trip, weekend trips/retreats, and service opportunities like summer staff at Young Life properties.
  • Build ecumenical friendships and collaboration with universities, campus ministries, local churches/parishes, and community organizations.
  • Raise funds from an existing personal network to supplement area-wide fundraising.
  • Partner with area staff and volunteers to:
    • Recruit, train and support college students to serve as volunteer leaders for local middle schools, high schools and colleges.
    • Expand the network of adult stakeholders who own and support college ministry.
    • Execute area-wide fundraising initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • Preferred candidates will have an established record of spiritual leadership that includes at least one of the following:
    • Three or more years of experience as a Young Life volunteer leader and/or staff.
    • Three or more years of experience as a member of the Notre Dame community.
    • Three or more years of experience leading ministry to college students.

  • Compelling passion to serve college students from various backgrounds, including those with little or no church/faith experience.
  • History of building teams of people from diverse backgrounds of race, ethnicity, spirituality (or lack thereof) and denomination.
  • A global perspective of the Church universal and passion for Kingdom collaboration.
  • Self-starting drive and eager-to-learn attitude that propels curiosity-unto-action, ongoing improvement, personal growth, and professional development.

Benefits:

  • Salary commensurate with experience.
  • 401(k) options, including employer matching funds.
  • Full medical benefits.
  • Flexible paid time off.
  • Ongoing mentoring, education, training and professional development.
