Area Director — Suffern, NY

Description:

The Lower Hudson Valley area is situated just north of New York City (30 miles to downtown) with the dense population of a New York City suburb, as well as the beautiful surroundings of mountains and state parks. The county is made up of a diverse range of nationalities, including a substantial Jewish population. It has a very high median income level (ninth in the country), but a great disparity in income distribution.

The Lower Hudson Valley Young Life was started 16 years ago as an outpost for Young Life in Southern New York. Since then Young Life has opened new areas in the surrounding counties of Westchester County (N.Y.) and Bergen County (N.J.). The Lower Hudson Valley area ministry currently consists of three active clubs: one WyldLife middle school ministry, one Young Life high school ministry, and one Capernaum ministry. It is also in the beginning stages of having its own YoungLives ministry. The area has teams of volunteer leaders for each ministry, many of whom are young adults out of college. It is currently led by an area director who will begin a new area in neighboring Orange County. The Capernaum club has dozens of volunteers (which includes several dedicated leaders and high school/middle school buddies from the area) and collaborates with a nearby Capernaum ministry in Bergen County, N.J. While the area has had a dynamic high school ministry for many years, there are more than a dozen schools in the county that have never had a Young Life presence, so there is plenty of opportunity for growth. The area has a history of strong direct ministry in club, camping and Campaigners and is supported by a committee that is committed to seeing ministry flourish.

The ideal candidate would be someone with Young Life staff experience and a desire to serve in the Northeast. This position could be filled by someone who is currently an area director, someone completing his or her staff associate placement, or potentially by a staff associate who could be supervised and trained by a neighboring area director.
