Area Director — Sound Shore, NY


Young Life in Westchester County, N.Y., is seeking an area director to develop and build a Young Life area in a thriving group of suburban New York City towns (30–35 minute train ride from mid-town Manhattan), as well as providing substantial influence of the development of Young Life in the Southern Westchester County Metro. Part of the Westchester County Metro, this area will serve the school districts of Mamaroneck/Larchmont, Rye, Rye Neck. Opportunity for oversight of development into Portchester and Harrison School districts.


​Incarnational Leadership

  • Own and run a suburban WyldLife and/or high school club ministry in year one, including participation in camp.
  • Exemplify consistency and frequency in all three levels of contact work.
  • Incarnational Leadership: Recruit, train and deploy volunteers from a variety of contexts (churches, teachers, small colleges) in coordination with the county staff team.

Local Ownership

  • Work with Sound Shore committee and metro director to build relationships with current and future local donors.
  • Lead a new committee as they adapt their own ministry in a multi-town area.
  • Assume responsibility for the local area budget along with the Sound Shore committee.
  • Raise money by increasing the number of local donors (breadth of support) and $40,000 personal support (outside Westchester).
  • Facilitate the development of new county-wide ministries including YoungLives, College, Capernaum as well as traditional, town-based high school and WyldLife ministries.

Professional Supervision

  • Assist in the leadership and development of staff associates in adjoining areas.
  • In year one or two, hire and supervise staff associates to run new ministries and/or towns.


  • Genuine, deep and growing love of Christ.
  • An awareness, ability and willingness to engage in a spiritually challenging environment.
  • An obvious demonstration of love for Jesus, then love for others, then love for Young Life.
  • A passion for and giftedness in working with teenagers directly.
  • A successful track record gathering teenagers in middle school and/or high school.
  • College degree.
  • Willingness and sense of professionalism needed to connect with and build relationships with adults and teenagers in a sophisticated, often-polished atmosphere.
  • Ability to adapt to the unique culture in the Northeast.
  • An ability and willingness to integrate principles and practice into the local context.
  • Young Life team leader experience.
  • Teachability.​
  • Personal base of support ($40,000).
  • Ability to work independently and on a team.
  • Strong leadership skills and experience in developing people.
  • Ability to patiently teach adults about the distinctives of the Young Life mission​

​The Sound Shore area is a group of New York City suburban communities, with a population of 82,000 in the Westchester County Young Life Metro (a county with a total population of one million). There are many families with school-aged children in these communities eager to see good programs for their kids and glad to pay for it. This is a charming place to live and work, but it is also fast-paced and driven by the professional commuter culture.

While this job will be oversight of a start up, the new area director will build on a solid foundation of local generous donors in a metro area with limitless potential. The area director will serve on a growing metro team with other staff in neighboring areas in Lower Westchester County.
