Area Director - Lisbon, Portugal

Description:

Young Life Portugal is seeking an area director in Parede, located just outside the capital city of Lisbon on the picturesque Portuguese coast. The area hosts many internationals from diplomatic, business and military backgrounds, and is also home to many national Portuguese people. The mix of cultures in the Lisbon suburbs is really quite exciting, and it helps that, even though the national language is Portuguese, it’s very easy to get by with English in this area as well.

Young Life has been growing in Portugal since 1999, working in both local international and national schools. We have a volunteer leaders from many different countries, serving in the language they’re most comfortable (Portuguese or English).

For the last six years, Young Life Portugal has also hosted Surf Camp, which is the only English speaking summer camp option for Western Europe. Surf Camp draws kids from not only our own country, but other countries throughout Europe. Surf Camp is a growing camping ministry and is strategic in reaching kids in our area. We also have a small, but wonderful Young Life committee, made up of internationals and nationals alike, from the local churches and businesses—all who want to see kids come to know Christ.

The area director role will oversee our International Schools ministry (includes WyldLife in English and Young Life in English) as well as oversee our national staff person doing national ministry (includes WyldLife in Portuguese and Young Life in Portuguese). We currently have national staff who do direct ministry in Portuguese, but we are hoping to find someone who can not only do ministry in English, but can also provide a strong Young Life background and core for the national ministry as well.

Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate spiritual leadership on a personal and corporate level.
  • Develop a community of local volunteer leaders — both to work with kids and to serve on the local committee.
  • Collaborate with the national staff as a team to train, disciple and develop volunteer leaders.
  • Develop new and grow already existing ministries, outreach and discipleship opportunities that are appropriate for the context of the schools.
  • Oversee the resource development of the area; meet with donors and oversee fundraising events and opportunities.
  • Participate in dynamic direct ministry with kids — English language to begin with, but certainly the hope would be to expand into Portuguese as well (contact work, Campaigners, club and camping).
  • Oversee and direct Young Life Portugal’s Surf Camp.

Qualifications:

  • A deep love for Christ and lost teenagers.
  • A strong Young Life background is required; previous staff experience preferred.
  • Adventurous and adaptable attitude for a new culture. Must be able to relate, work and build community in a multicultural, multilingual area.
  • Vision and ability to recruit, develop and multiply leaders.
  • Ability to identify and develop fundraising opportunities in the local community.
  • College degree required.
  • Proven relational skills with both kids and adults.
  • Strong written and verbal communications.
  • Portuguese language skills preferred, but not required.
  • A teachable heart and a desire to help others learn as well.
  • Be willing to make a three-year commitment.

Benefits:

Housing supplements and cost of living adjustments help make living overseas affordable for international staff. In addition, staff may raise funds and be reimbursed for the purchase of a vehicle, an annual personal trip to see family, pre-K through 12th grade private school education for dependent children, language school, moving expenses, and a one-time bonus of up to two-months’ salary.
