June 2020

Jason looks like he could be the big brother of Little Orphan Annie, except he is not that big. He is a high school freshman who has not yet hit his final growth spurt, but has a smile that covers his whole freckled face beneath his red curly hair. Like Annie, Jason is also a spunky character who is bringing hope and joy to the adults around him during a time of turmoil and hardship.

At the beginning of the pandemic, Jason’s Young Life leader asked Jason if he would like to meet online and explore the Bible. Jason was all in, and after the first day asked, “Can we do this every day?” Since then, the two have met through FaceTime® five days a week in the afternoon to read Scripture and process God’s Word together.

The week after Easter, Jason and his leader were working through a study created by The Bible App that ended with the questions, “Do you have a relationship with Jesus? Would you like to begin one now?” Jason carefully considered the question, then told his leader, “I know about God, but I don’t have a relationship with Him. I would like to have a relationship with Jesus.”

Jason and his leader prayed together, heart-to-heart and screen-to-screen, and Jason surrendered his life to the Savior. The two have continued to meet every day online, but last week Jason’s leader showed up at his door with a new Bible — a physical book Jason could hold in his hands instead of read online. The friends sat for a few minutes outside, six feet apart, as Jason turned the crisp pages of his first Bible, an in-person experience that they hope to repeat often in the months to come.

Thank you for supporting Young Life, especially during this time of turmoil and upheaval. Thank you for clearing a path for leaders to continue to make their way to young people who need to know Jesus. We are all longing for the day when we can gather face-to-face instead of meeting screen-to-screen. Until that day, pray with me for our staff and leaders who are navigating a world turned upside down, looking for lost sheep like Jason and sharing by any means possible the good news. It is a privilege to partner with you in Young Life.

In Christ for all kids,
