A Letter to Alumni— Capernaum

Dear Young Life Alumni,

I would love to share with you about one of our Young Life ministries, Capernaum! Capernaum has the advantage of being innovative in most of what we do. We have realized that while providing opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to be introduced to Jesus and grow in their faith, we, as a mission, are also being discipled. This summer we experienced many examples of this mutuality.

Through Capernaum we watched God transform adventure camping for people of all abilities. There were nearly 100 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities at Young Life adventure camps all over the country. Alongside their Young Life leader or a good friend, our Capernaum campers hiked, carried their own backpacks, slept in tents, cooked meals over campfires, and went canoeing and white-water rafting. Everyone involved became deeply aware that the God who created all of nature is also able to use every one of us — just as we are — to bring Him glory.

Please enjoy this video which captures the first trip of Capernaum campers at Young Life’s new camp in West Virginia — Wild Ridge!

In 2019, we also placed 60 Capernaum work crew or summer staff students alongside a trained coach at Young Life camps across the United States. Their coworkers reported that they were impacted by the unconditional love displayed in the relationship between our friends and their coaches. These Capernaum students exuded an extraordinary ability to be authentic and touched many by their gratefulness and joy to be part of a servant-hearted team and contribute through a meaningful job.

I am grateful for the opportunities being provided by thinking creatively in Young Life! To learn more about Capernaum, please visit our website.

As alumni, there are many ways that YOU can walk alongside us as we journey with our friends:
  • PRAY. Please pray for the leaders serve with us all over the world. Pray that the Lord would lead, guide and direct them.
  • CONNECT. Do you know of someone that has a heart for teens with disabilities? Connect them with us. Contact your local Area Director for more information on Capernaum. Find your local area here
  • GIVE. We can't do this without you! Please prayerfully consider how you can walk alongside us by being a Capernaum donor. Visit us here to give
