Giving Kids Hope Racing Project: A Mike Edwards Motorsports and
Young Life Partnership
Mike Edwards Motorsports competes in the highly competitive National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Pro Stock Class. Pro Stock is one of four professional classes that compete in NHRA Drag Racing. The average fan coming to an NHRA event can easily identify with the Pro Stock class because the racers drive scale versions of Detroit’s hottest sports coupes. However, NHRA Pro Stock cars have some special differences from the car in the garage at home.
Some interesting facts about the Pro Stock Class are:
- Modified, gasoline-burning cars that travel a quarter-mile in less than seven seconds.
- Pro Stock cars produce about 1,400 horsepower, more than eight times that of the average street car.
- Speeds routinely exceed 200 mph and races are usually won or lost by thousandths of a second and less than a car length.
Mike Edwards, former NHRA Rookie of the Year and 15-time national event winner, has achieved impressive results in this highly competitive racing environment. Now in his 10th year as a Pro Stock driver, Edwards has finished in the NHRA POWERade Top 10 seven times. To view results from past events, check out the NHRA Web Site.
Giving Kids Hope Racing Project
Just seven years ago, Mike Edwards, NHRA Pro Stock drag racer, and Young Life partnered together in the Giving Kids Hope Racing Project. This project works through the exciting world of speed — NHRA drag racing, reaching young people across the country with the message of hope.
The project reaches at-risk minority youth. This program is not just about racing, but it is about meeting and accepting kids as they are with an energetic and positive message. We want to demonstrate unconditional love and encourage young people to reach their God-given potential in life.
