Young Life is a Christian ministry whose mission is introducing adolescents to Jesus Christ and helping them grow in their faith. All duties are to be performed in a manner that is compatible with the mission of Young Life.

Area Director – Southeast Seattle, WA

Description:
Southeast Seattle consists of an incredible mix of people, places, neighborhoods and neighbors. It is the city, but it is also the quiet shores of Lake Washington. Young Life has been operating in southeast Seattle for decades. Southeast Seattle includes the Seattle neighborhoods of Rainer Valley, Becon Hill, Capitol Hill, First Hill, the Central District, Leschi and Madison Park. We are looking for an area director who would like to develop this area to its full potential as a ministry to all people in the community.

Responsibilities:
  • Ministry
    • Spiritual leadership.
    • Ensure that all ministry in the area is designed and carried out with a dependence on prayer that takes place out of the overflow of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
  • Staff and Leaders
    • Recruit, screen, place, train, supervise, support, encourage and evaluate volunteer leaders for both high school and WyldLife ministry.
    • Ensure area leadership strategy is producing healthy people, healthy teams and healthy ministry.
    • Supervise and evaluate supervisees in their leadership development, personal spiritual formation and their area ministry.
    • Develop a training and supervisory structure appropriate for leaders involved in any specialized ministries.
  • Kids
    • Be active in all three levels of contact work.
    • Lead a model Young Life or WyldLife club.
    • Ensure the health of all existing area club ministries.
    • Develop a plan for reaching every high school and middle school community in the area.
    • Work with committee to develop and implement that plan.
    • Lead or co-lead a model Campaigners ministry.
    • Develop an area discipleship plan.
    • Coordinate any all-area Young Life ministry events.
  • Camping
    • Develop and implement a summer and school-season camping strategy that reflects the potential of seven years of involvement, from WyldLife through high school.
    • Make use of Young Life camp facilities and programs as a tool for evangelism and discipleship.
    • Serve on a four-week summer assignment two out of every three years.
    • Provide quality summer staff, trained work crew and strategic adult guests for summer camps.
    • Serve in leadership positions at school-season area and regional camps.
  • Area Ministry Management
    • Plan and implement a strategy for area ministry development and growth with an eye toward every kid and every high school and middle school.
    • Consider resources for beginning ministries such as YoungLives.
    • Maintain an office that operates professionally and efficiently.
    • Ensure that all Young Life policies and procedures for area management are followed.
    • Plan and implement a strategy for area mailings and other avenues of communication.
  • Committee
    • Recruit, develop, encourage and sustain a local area committee as partners in ministry.
    • Ensure that a trained volunteer, in the role of committee chairperson, leads the committee.
    • Strive for a representative committee of age, ethnicity, church attendance, etc. with representation from every ministry or club in the area.
    • Work with the committee to develop good community relationships.
    • Ensure a taking donors seriously (TDS) leadership team is in place and functioning.
  • Financial Management
    • Oversee development and management of the local area budget with committee leadership.
    • Turn in budget with supporting Field Development Tool (FDT) one month prior to the start of the fiscal year.
    • Ensure a TDS plan involving an area vision statement, FDT, priority prospect list, strategy and financial master plan is implemented and reviewed.
    • Ensure that all Young Life financial policies and procedures are implemented.
    • Ensure adequate financial support is raised to fund area expenses.
    • Continue to be attentive to personal fundraising to supplement area fundraising as needed.
  • Other
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the regional director.
    • Actively participate in a local church.
  • Training
    • Missionwide Training
      • Area Director School is required.
      • Participation in any required TDS training as available.
      • Participation in All Staff Conference every four years and available Young Life training conferences.
      • Participation in additional training or experiences if deemed necessary.
    • Regional Training
      • There is no missionwide, regional-level training curriculum.
      • At the regional director's prerogative, certain regional training events may be required.
  • Personal Development
    • Encouragement to pursue continuing educational opportunities including graduate degrees.
    • Encouragement to pursue seminars designed to enhance professional skills.
    • Encouragement to participate in programs designed for personal spiritual maturity or personal enrichment.
  • Portfolio Assignments
    • Accept both short- and long-term assignments or projects and complete them as requested.

Qualifications:
  • A strong, growing spiritual life is a must.
  • The applicant must also have a strong and lengthy Young Life background, and although prior Young Life employment is not required, it would be a huge asset.
  • Must have a college degree and five or more years of Young Life experience.
  • The applicant must have a successful ministry record working in an urban and multicultural environment.
  • The applicant must have both solid kid skills as well as very strong adult work and organizational skills.

Seattle is simply one of the greatest cities in the United States. In southeast Seattle, you are in the heart of the city. Walk to one of the many unique coffee shops, stroll down a unique avenue of shops and people and then enjoy an afternoon on Lake Washington. Southeast Seattle has it all. It has some of the most incredible homes in the city and some of the most incredible need in the city. High-rise condos sit blocks from low-rise common housing. There are incredible churches in this community and it includes some of the most reasonably priced (that is, for Seattle) housing in the city.

Notes:
South Seattle Young Life currently has a part-time staff person doing ministry at a local middle school. There is also a volunteer team leader at the local high school. There is an incredible group of people who love kids in the city working on committee.
