Cancelling club, Campaigners, camp and other Young Life events. Our policy is to follow the direction of local authorities. Students from a closed school should not be allowed to attend Young Life events. Young Life policy requires cancelling Young Life gatherings, including club and Campaigners, when local authorities close schools.
Young Life Camping
Young Life has anticipated and is prepared to deal with cases of the flu among campers attending one of our 20 camps throughout North and Central America. Our first goal is to ensure a safe and rewarding experience for all campers, leaders, work crew and camp staff. To that end, camp staff and health professionals are committed to working closely with local and state Department of Health officials if and when flu cases are identified. We also ask our staff attending non-Young Life camps to be aware of Young Life protocols and carry these out at the facilities they’re using.
Young Life, of course, asks our staff and parents/guardians of campers and work crew to take precautions to avoid sending campers or leaders on a trip or work crew to their weekend if they have had any flu-like symptoms in the seven days prior to departure. Such symptoms can include: fever, sore throat, cough, headache, tiredness, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, chills, diarrhea and vomiting.
The state and county health officials our camp staff have been in contact with emphasized that Influenza Type A (of which H1N1 or “Swine Flu” is a variant) is very similar to the regular seasonal flu. We are not to be alarmed by it but need to take precautions to prevent it from spreading and to care for those with symptoms.
As cases of the flu arise at Young Life camps this year, our camp staff will follow the protocols established for such situations. Our camp health professionals will work closely with the Department of Health in counties where our camps are located to determine a course of action that ensures the safety of campers, leaders, work crew and staff. These steps include isolating the infected individual, administering anti-viral medications to at-risk individuals and disinfecting surfaces as appropriate. These protocols also apply to non-Young Life groups using our facilities.
With these precautions in place, we are confident that campers, leaders and work crew will be as safe at camp as they would be in any public setting.
We are committed to open and clear communication with parents and guardians of our campers. If you have questions or concerns about someone presently attending or serving at a Young Life camp or about an upcoming camp trip, please contact your local Young Life office, the camp office where your child is/will be attending or the Communications department at (719) 381-1891.
